BM Geothermal

BM's Geothermal Group is a leading supplier of single point source of geothermal development services that aim to explore, develop and present turnkey geothermal projects by investing in project development, R&D, implementation and operation.

Our team of in-house specialists can undertake complex tasks ranging from full-scale exploration and 3D reservoir modeling to drilling, logging, testing and formation of deep geothermal wells and also power plant construction, O&M and support.

BM's Geothermal Group with its eight years of aggressive investment in the field of Geothermal has earned the company leading position in the Turkish geothermal market and is among Turkey's foremost explorationists with a current portfolio of 10 project areas, 4 proven and 3 indicated reserve discoveries, and 3 strong prospects. BM is currently constructing its first GEPP in Germencik region in the city of Aydın in the South-West of Turkey, with the second one in early reservoir assessment stage.

Our mission is to become a leading global renewable power project developer and supplier of clean and reliable geothermal power.

Capabilities

BM's business approach to geothermal exploration is so far known to be unique to any other exploration company active in the Turkish market. During its initial interest in geothermal exploration, BM engaged a number of renowned local experts for conducting a thorough regional study of the Aegean and Anatolian Regions of Turkey. BM's prospect license applications were prepared fully based on the findings of this comprehensive study. While licenses for roughly 700,000 ha of land were initially acquired and 120,000 ha gradually eliminated through detailed studies, a second batch of approximately 50 000 ha attractive prospects is still being worked on. Throughout years, BM Geothermal Group has established itself on the technologies and services concerning geothermal fields are
  1. Research and Development, modeling, mapping and analysis for the temperature and flow estimates necessary to predict power.
  2.  1D, 2D and 3D Modeling using Geographical Information Systems (GIS)
  3. exploration and resource assessment, drilling engineering, logging, testing and formation of deep geothermal wells
  4. Conceptual design, preliminary and detailed engineering, design and support,

Research and Exploration

Complementary to its exploration works, BM is also employing an in-house research and exploration division for development of new models and methodologies for improving efficiency of exploration works. These fields include:
  1. Development of slim-hole cored drilling rigs to geothermal conditions; BM Group already own and operates two deep drilling rigs with 3000m theoretical depth capacity,
  2. Development of slim-hole well control & blowout prevention, well stimulation and flow systems (multiple patents pending, registered trademark),
  3. Development of a low-cost geothermal mud logging system from industrial measurement units (registered trademark),
  4. Development of surface (shallow) thermometry drilling and measurement system, adapted from drifter type construction drilling rigs and industrial measurement devices (published),
  5. Development of enhanced medium and low enthalpy energy generation systems by using solar thermal – geothermal hybrid Technologies.

Geographical and Geoscience Information Systems

As another important point, BM has also put Turkey's geographical and geoscience information into a GIS data base and created what is most probably the most comprehensive GIS database in the private sector in Turkey. BM's current database originates from its core business hydropower and related data, and was evolved through an eight year study period. It incorporates data from a high number of sources including:

  1. Offset well data acquired from a wide range of institutions
  2. Hot springs and existing geothermal facilities
  3. Surface geology maps from past studies and in-house efforts,
  4. Landsat, Aster images for project areas,
  5. Lineament maps derived from remote sensing studies,
  6. Active tectonics mapping for most project areas,
  7. 1:25000 topographical maps for 1/3rd of Turkey,
  8. Subsurface (shallow) thermometry,
  9. Geochemistry maps
  10. Geophysics data

Additional to the 2D GIS database and analysis, BM has moved to 3D modeling and currently operates many of the reservoir modeling questions within its in-house team.

Drilling, Well Completion and Testing Services

Drilling and well completion is probably the most expensive and complex part of any geothermal project, and is ironically often also the least understood. BM's subsidiary BM Completion was founded for the purpose of offering state of the art drilling and completion services to the Turkish geothermal market.

The company offers a wide range of services from well engineering, drilling supervision, mud logging and cementing to numerous completion tasks such as logging and acidizing and an array of well tests.
